We would like to share our Norwegian experiences in our own words and photos. From all that we see along the way to the great products that we find that are worthwhile introducing to the Netherlands.
stories
Elke van Buul had never been to Norway. In 2018 we invited her to join us. We asked Elke to write about her experience and her story starts with:
‘It all started in November 2017. As is often the case, we had dinner and drinks with friends. We had discussed it previously, saying we were curious about Kari’s country and family.’
It is a beautiful, chilly but sunny, Monday morning in September.
Today, we have a big hike planned. Not very long, but the altitude is challenging. Kari and I are on our way to Tysnes, some twenty minutes by ferry from Os. After the ferry, we have to drive another 20 minutes to the hiking trail.
On our way from Bergen to Os suddenly we were stucked in traffic. No worries – it was on the roundabout near the exit to Troldhaugen, where the Edvard Grieg museum is located. Easy choice. Let’s go to the museum!
‘We park the car and walk up the hill to the museum. It is a place of serene tranquillity.
Many homes in Os look out on the Folgefonna. My ‘mor og far’ (my parents) also look out on it from their home. On clear days, the view of the glacier is even better.
It is a very special place, and we’ve visited it several times, most recently in 2018 with our group of friends. We drove the car along the Hardanger fjord, and took the ferry across the fjord to Jondal.
André had never been to the northern part of Bergen. Beautiful nature and with a ride over the ‘Nordhordlandsbridge’. With it’s 614 meters the second-one longest bridge in Norway. We had a goal. To bring a visit to Hillesvåg wool factory. The wool supplier of our wristlets.
‘The views on the way to Knarvik take my breath away. It’s my first trip to this region.’
I can count on one hand the Christmases I didn’t celebrate ‘at home’ since I moved to the Netherlands 35 years ago. And when I say home, I mean Norway in this context.
Christmas (‘Jul’ in Norwegian) is a very special holiday for us Norwegians. A time of traditions, but also a time that we want to spend with family. It is so special, I wouldn’t want to miss that, and neither would André, he’s also grown fond of it.
